Don’t Forget the Little People!

2:07 pm August 24th, 2008

By Evan Bartholomew, Lead Minister.

“Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him. It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: ‘Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.’” 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (NIV).

Some of the brothers hanging out after an awesome Midweek Service and prayer time!

As Paul wrote these words to the Corinthian church in about 54-55 AD, one cannot help but to appreciate the heart of Paul. Certainly, if anyone had any reason to “boast” in his own wisdom or strength, it would have been Paul. “According to the strictest sect of our religion, I lived as a Pharisee” (Acts 26:5), Paul claimed as he stood on trial before King Agrippa. Paul, most likely, knew even more than some of the disciples at the point of his conversion, “Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.” (Acts 9:19-20) Yet, in spite of all his knowledge and achievements as a Pharisee, God humbled him greatly! His perspective of himself shifted!

2008 Hilo Workshop: “In the Hands of God”

3:47 pm August 17th, 2008

By Evan Bartholomew, Lead Minister.

“Listen to Me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: Before I was born the Lord called Me; from My birth He has made mention of My name. He made My mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of His hand He hid Me; He made Me into a polished arrow and concealed Me in His quiver. He said to Me, ‘You are My servant, Israel, in whom I will display My splendor.’ But I said, ‘I had labored to no purpose; I have spent My strength in vain for nothing. Yet what is due Me is in the Lord’s hand, and My reward is with My God.’” Isaiah 49:1-4 (NIV).

Here in Isaiah, the prophet speaks of a great “Redeemer and Holy One of Israel” (Isaiah 49:7) who would not only “restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel”, but would also be a “light for the Gentiles, that [the Redeemer] may bring [God’s] salvation to the ends of the earth.” (Isaiah 49:6) We have come to know this great Redeemer to be found in Jesus Christ, who’s message of salvation is still being spread to the “ends of the earth” through His true and faithful followers! This includes even the most remote of places of the world, like the “islands!”

The Five Year Plan!

6:20 pm August 3rd, 2008

Guest article by Kip McKean.

(Editor’s note: The following guest article is taken from the web site of our sister church in Los Angeles, California, the City of Angels International Christian Church.)

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:3.

Today marks fifteen months since the Spirit planted the City of Angels International Christian Church on May 6, 2007! Since that time God has added to our 42 member Mission Team from Portland, 121 baptisms and 62 restorations! In the past two months, 30 disciples have been sent out: Melina Zepeda to Santiago, Chile as a full-time intern; Kyle and Joan Bartholomew and the Honolulu Mission Team; and today DJ and Kacie Comisford and the New York City Mission Team. To achieve these dreams, nine months ago $71,000 was raised for the City of Angels Church to be self-supporting; then one month ago $126,000 was joyfully sacrificed for missions. Therefore, the Spirit has multiplied our one congregation into three, while taking on the support of Matt and Helen Sullivan in Santiago for $3,500 per month. Even after sending out so many powerful disciples, the City of Angels Church has 206 members with a weekly contribution of $8,500! Participating in these modern day miracles, Lu Jack Martinez, a disciple converted at Harvard in the early days of Boston, stated, “Never before, in my 22 years as a disciple of Christ, have I ever seen a single congregation do so much, for so many, with so little! Truly, these miracles of God – in the midst of Satan’s vicious attacks – evidence that we are not a movement of man, but a movement of God!”

Church of Dreams; If You Build It, They Will Come!

2:25 pm July 30th, 2008

By Evan Bartholomew, Lead Minister.

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Acts 2:17-21 (NIV).

Renee emerges after a powerful baptism!

As the Kingdom of God came down to Earth at Pentecost, Peter is recorded quoting this scripture from the book of Joel. He quotes the scripture as an explanation to the Jews in attendance who were baffled by the workings of the Holy Spirit. Without a doubt, it was an important scripture as it was the first scripture ever used at a “church” service! In it’s prophetic message to the Israelites, it speaks of God sending down His Spirit on ALL people where It’s power would be evidenced by sons and daughters who will prophecy, young men who will see visions, and old men who will dream dreams! God’s Kingdom, the church of dreams, was to be a movement full of dreamers! More »
